Building a patio in Attadale: what the City of Melville requires
Building permit: not needed for a freestanding patio or carport of 10 m² or less and 2.4 m or less in height (outside wind regions C and D). A pergola with a Class 1 building needs none if it is 2.4 m or less high and covers 20 m² or less. Pergolas with an impervious roof, such as Colorbond or polycarbonate, are treated as patios. Structures attached to the house may need a permit.
Planning approval: needed if the proposal does not comply with the Residential Design Codes or the City’s local planning policies.
Engineering: a structural engineer must check and certify the design. Owner-builders need an Owner-Builder Certificate for work worth $20,000 or more.
